May 1 (Bloomberg) — This year's British Open Championship will be played over the longest golf course in the tournament's 147-year history after the organizer added 60 yards (55 meters) to Carnoustie in northeast Scotland. At 7,421 yards, par is 71 and there are only two par-5s and three par-3s, including the 245-yard 16th, which can stretch to as long as 290 yards depending on how far back the hole is cut. The most northerly Open course produced one of the most bizarre climaxes to any golf tournament in 1999, when Carnoustie was picked after a 24-year absence. Jean Van de Velde entered tournament lore after the 152nd-ranked player blew his chance for victory at the final hole. Despite his fame, Van de Velde won't become the first player to be given a special invitation to the Open. read more
