That's why Norman, 22, of Hobe Sound was among 70-plus golfers at Ironhorse Country Club vying for 14 spots into next month's Florida State Amateur Championship at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta. Norman wasn't the only son of a famous golfer there - Gary Nicklaus, the third-youngest son of Jack Nicklaus was there, as was Olin Browne Jr. Not surprisingly, Gary, the former PGA Tour pro who once lost to Phil Mickelson in a PGA Tour playoff in Atlanta in 2000, easily advanced with a 72; Browne and Norman failed to qualify after 78s, Norman having to add a two-shot penalty because of confusion over whether a ball was out of bounds or in a hazard. Nakashian (70) and Dan Germaine (71) of Palm Beach Gardens; Michael Kartrude (71) of Royal Palm Beach; Mark Peel (72) and Charles Pal (74) of Delray Beach; Keeny Leech (74) of Boca Raton; Peter Williams (74) of Juno Beach; Ben Adelburg (74) and Alex Redfearn (74) of Boynton Beach; and Greg O'Mahoney (74) of Tequesta. Danny Evelyn (75) of Wellington and Robbie Wight (75) of West Palm Beach qualified in a three-way playoff, with Brendan Iler (75) of Palm Beach Gardens the first alternate. read more
