The Easiest Way to Swing a Golf Club: Part Two

Part Two: How to Swing

You might be surprised that I spent so long on how you stand and grip the club when I am talking about the easiest way to swing a golf club. This is because these are the things I have found have helped improve my swing and my golf game most. When I have a problem with my game, I go to the pro who just checks my stance, my grip and he sees me hit a couple of balls. It usually needs only 5-10 minutes of his time.

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of the easiest way to swing a golf club. When you go to the practice ground or driving range, adopt the stance I described in Part 1, and then put your feet together. That will limit your swing, won’t it? Good. That is what you want to do when you start something new.

Hit with the hands only

What you are going to do is to learn or relearn how to hit the ball relying hand action. You see if your hands cannot get the club face square at impact the ball will go all over the place. Now the first thing to do is just to swing the club back, without turning your shoulders, cock your wrists, and then bring the club down to hit the ball. The first won’t go far, but they will further than if you try a full swing straight away.

I recommend you hit 20-30 balls this way each time you go to the driving range – if you are beginner it is the ONLY way to hit the ball for the first few sessions. This way, you will train your hand and wrist muscles to bring the club to the ball correctly.

Once you have done that you want to extend the swing. Get in the correct stance with the feet the width of your shoulders. Now, make sure that a bit more weight is on the left that right foot – for right-handers, the opposite for left-handers.

Swing back with your arms

The easiest way to swing a golf club now is to turn your arms back and upward, turning the legs as little as you can – in fact you turn against your legs, but don’t think of that. Just think of taking the club back and up. Do not bend that left arm. keep it straight. When you think you have gone back far enough, just turn back.

Now here is the really important point. Don’t think of hitting the ball, think of hitting through the ball, with the club getting faster on the way down. That is not such an easy concept – it comes a bit later – but you will tend to do that if you do the first exercise – swinging with the hands only.

To recap: Just take the club back, relying on your grip and position to get it right, and keep your left arm straight. Don’t go so far that it bends. Now, you jut reverse the process, letting the club accelerate as it comes down. All you have to do is watch that ball like a hawk, until you have hit it!
