Golf swing hints: Overcoming Golf Swing Inertia Without Practice

Believe it or not, the best golf swing hints I have received recently have not come from a golf pro, nor did they involve me changing the swing. People often get in a twist about one feature of the swing, such as overcoming golf swing inertia, which is really about starting the swing smoothly while retaining your balance.

Think about overcoming golf swing inertia as you take a swing, and the chances are that you will not succeed. Don’t think about the swing at all, and you will just be overcoming golf swing inertia without knowing it! This is one of the things I learned from a  course that helps you improve your golf game from your armchair.

Now, I must admit that when I received this email telling me I could break 80 without practice, part of me was intrigued, but the other part said: ‘You must be joking’ and was all set to delete the email. I didn’t delete it though. After all, I am always ready to listen to a few golf swing hints as I try to improve my game.

Why was I so sceptical?  I used to play good golf, under 80, but gave the game up for 25 years, and now I’m struggling. Practice and tuition got my game going before so that was what I was doing now – and I had got down from 100 plus to 88-92, except on those really bad days which we all want to forget!

So, I was sceptical. I had heard a lot about golf sports psychology, which might work for the pros, but is more difficult to handle for weekend golfers. Also, I had tried golf hypnosis. So I was really sceptical, but intrigued.

Overcoming golf swing inertia from your armchair

As soon as I bought this report and started reading, I could see that it made sense. It includes many different ways of improving your golf without getting out of your armchair – really – and I started to get into them. I was pleased that there wasn’t lots of mumbo-jumbo in there about  golf sports psychology, nor was there anything telling me I would soon be playing like Tiger Woods, even though he uses some of these techniques.

I started studying this stuff, and was all fired up, trying to put it into practice. Well, I found it helped a bit, but I was not quite getting there.

golf hypnosis I was trying too hard, and when I got back after every game I realised that I had forgotten some of the things I was supposed to be doing. Well, you know what it is like on the first tee on a competition, when you have to hit a narrow fairway with dense trees each side. Just let’s get this ball of the tee – somehow!

After a while of expecting too much too soon, I recalled the three days when I played my best golf – this was in the 1970s. The first was when I won a competition on a difficult and strange course; another was my best round on my old course; and the third was when I played for the first time in an invitation foursomes. I peppered the pin all day, but unfortunately my partner was having an off-day.

When I thought about that day at the Berkshire, I recalled that I was in a different mental state from normal. I could not put my finger on it, except recalling that my partner – a much better golfer than me – was having an attack of the shanks, and that kept my mind off my golf. I hardly had the chance to worry about my shots. And I played well, very well!

Golf swing hints: how to get in the zone without knowing it

So, if I could play well by keeping my mind off my game, what did that tell me? That we try too hard, and need to get in the right mental state – and that is what ‘Break 80 without practice’ is all about. It was then I realises that on those great days, I must have found how to get in the zone without knowing it. Hmmm.

So I went back to the break 80 without practice course, and started studying again, and putting it into practice. Does it work? Yes, it does, but you can’t expect results in a day. Well, that is not quite true because if you adopt the ideas on pre-shot routine you are likely to make an improvement quickly.

The thing is that we do many complex things on automatic – like I am typing this now, and as soon as I let thoughts getting between my mind and my fingers I make mistakes! Same with golf. My thoughts, like ‘I don’t want to go into the trees on this hole’ get in the way and actually direct my mind to aim for the trees!

I’m on my way to lower scores, no doubt about it. I can now play more good shots, and hit more fairways, but yes, I still play some bad shots, and I haven’t broken 80 yet. But I will. That I know.

The great thing about this course is that it is not one-size-fits-all. There are several different methods, and you pick the ones that help you best. My tip is to try them all and see which ones you are most comfortable with. So if you are wondering about    overcoming golf swing inertia or some other little problem, just forget it and learn how to let your mind do it for you – this is golf sports psychology in a very down-to-earth way. Simple, in fact. And this stuff really works!

It is important to remember, though, that you do have to get your mind to replace old destructive ideas with these new methods. It needs a bit of repetition and practice. But we are talking minutes, not hours, and you can do it in your armchair. Follow these golf swing hints and you’ll break 80 without practice. Join me in the club.
